Data storage giant Western Digital has confirmed that hackers exfiltrated data from its systems during a “network security incident” in which an unauthorized third party gained access to “a number” of its internal systems on March 26.
Although Western Digital did not specify what kind of incident, its statement confirming the incident suggests it may be linked to ransomware. “Based on the investigation to date, the company believes the unauthorized party obtained certain data from its systems and is working to understand the nature and scope of that data,” Western Digital said. However, the incident has not yet been claimed by any major ransomware group.
