U.S. Citizen, El Salvador Journalists Sue NSO Group in the U.S. for Pegasus Spyware Hacks

American journalist Roman Gressier became the first U.S. citizen, along with several El Salvador-based journalists at the Central American media outlet El Faro, to sue NSO Group, the notorious makers of the prolific Pegasus spyware, in U.S. court, alleging the company sold spyware to the repressive regime of El Salvador’s strongman president Nayib Bukele to hack their phones.
Lawyers at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University filed suit in U.S. federal court against NSO Group, alleging that NSO’s development and use of Pegasus violate the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and, because of the location of Apple’s servers, a similar California statute. They also ask the court to order NSO to disclose where stolen data is stored and delete it.
