The government of Ukraine is asking for volunteers from the country's hacker underground to help protect critical infrastructure and conduct cyber spying missions against Russian troops, according to two people involved in the project.
Requests for volunteers began to appear on hacker forums as many residents fled the capital Kyiv. Yegor Aushev, the co-founder of Cyber Unit Technologies, a cybersecurity company in Kyiv, said he wrote a post on a hacker forum calling for volunteers at the request of a senior Defense Ministry official. Another person directly involved in the effort confirmed that the request came from the Defense Ministry. (Joel Schectman and Christopher Bing / Reuters)
