A mind-boggling campaign by hackers that some sources believe are part of a Russian state-backed group known as APT29 or Cozy Bear has been monitoring, at the minimum, email at the U.S. Treasury and Commerce Departments. The group is led by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, known as SVR. Experts and officials fear that the attackers have mounted a far more massive campaign that could affect virtually all major government and business institutions, including the CDC, the NSA, the State Department, the Justice Department, the White House, and most Fortune 500 companies, among other targets.
