As the smoke clears from the bombshell revelation that probable Russian hackers implanted surveillance malware across a vast range of government and corporate networks, the true magnitude of the devastating compromise is starting to emerge. On Sunday, Reuters broke the news that the malware had hit the U.S. Treasury and Commerce Departments. The malware has been dubbed SUNBURST by cybersecurity FireEye. It was delivered to its victims via a software update to a network monitoring product called Orion made by software supplier SolarWinds.
Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, and the National Institutes of Health joined the list of government agencies and offices that were months-long victims of the espionage.
