Russian intelligence agency Federal Security Service (FSB) said it uncovered an American espionage operation that compromised thousands of iPhones using sophisticated surveillance software, which may or may not have also swept up dozens of Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab’s employees’ devices.
The intel agency claimed that Apple “provides the American intelligence services with a wide range of opportunities to control both any person of interest to the White House, including their partners in anti-Russian activities, and their own citizens,” a claim that Apple denies. “We have never worked with any government to insert a backdoor into any Apple product and never will,” the company said in a statement.
