A new ransomware threat actor called DarkBit hit Israel’s flagship scientific research arm, the Israel Institute of Technology, also known as the Technion, with a ransomware attack demanding 80 bitcoins worth around $1.75 million in an incident.
Technion issued a statement on its LinkedIn account saying,"Technion was hacked. The hackers punished us for the 'apartheid' regime. All systems are not accessible and we have lost our data. Therefore, we have to temporarily stop our human resources procedures. Our most sincere apologies to all colleagues, partners and those who trust us.”
The ransom note posted by DarkBit is littered with messaging protesting tech layoffs and promoting anti-Israel rhetoric, as well as the group demanding a $1.7 million payment. Additionally, the message …
