A new round of sophisticated phishing attacks are planned by hackers and scammers targeting the complex “cold” supply chain of COVID-19 vaccines, researchers at IBM report. The vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna need to be transported and stored at frigid temperatures, necessitating a chain of experts known as the cold chain. A particular focus has been the companies associated with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance’s Cold Chain Equipment Optimization Platform, an effort to streamline and strengthen the cold chain. IBM researchers say a significant number of these companies have been targeted across six different countries, with hackers “pre-positioning” themselves ahead as early as last September. The only target IBM identified by name is the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union.
