In a landmark settlement, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will prohibit the data broker X-Mode, now known as Outlogic, from selling location data related to sensitive locations such as places of worship, reproductive health clinics, domestic abuse shelters, and more.
The FTC says the settlement is the agency’s first with a data broker concerning collecting and selling sensitive location information. The regulator alleges that Outlogic sold precise location data that could be used to track people’s visits to sensitive locations such as medical and reproductive health clinics, places of religious worship, and domestic abuse shelters.
The raw location data that X-Mode/Outlogic has sold is associated with mobile advertising IDs, which are unique identifiers for each mobile device. This…
