The Cuba ransomware group took credit for the crippling attack on Montenegro’s government which reported last week that it was facing Russia-linked cyber attacks.

The group claimed to have received the files belonging to the Montenegrin government’s Department for Public Relations on August 19, which allegedly contained information such as financial documents, correspondence with bank employees, balance sheets, tax documents, compensation, and source code.

But a download link for the files provided by the group is broken, and its claims cannot be verified. Although few cyber security companies have been confident enough to attribute the Cuba ransomware organization to a specific country, one firm, Profero, has linked it to Russia.
