German authorities have reportedly investigated a Russian man known only as Nikolay K., thought to be one of the prominent REvil ransomware gang members, now posing as a cryptocurrency investor and trader.
Boasting of his wealth online, the suspect left clues to his identity that, along with bitcoin transactions, investigators have traced. Authorities believe they have discovered links between REvil and GandCrab, which some security researchers and analysts have already reported. Police in Stuttgart are monitoring the suspect’s social media in the hopes he travels to a country with an extradition treaty with Germany. (Kai Biermann / Die Zeit)
